The Story of the Lost Ring

So, it's time for an "I Love Lucy" special, cooked up Diane style!

Now at first glance, I have the appearance of being the smart one in my family.  My report cards were perfect, my book smarts were stellar, and I've worked at a "think tank" (what's that?).  But if you ask any of my sisters, they'll tell you that I'm the most likely sister to have a major mental brain lapse.  And when it happens, it's bad:

Two nights ago, Mike and I were sitting on the couch discussing finances, when Mike started playing with his wedding band.

"Dink, donk, dink"!

Next thing we know, the ring had launched itself behind the couch and become wedged between the sofa and our kitchen island.  (Yes, our couch backs up to our kitchen.  Small living space!)  Mike and I looked at each other: "Oops!"  Mike was so distraught, in fact, he decided to wait until the next day to look for it.  Feel the love.
Scene of the crime
So yesterday afternoon, I get the email from Mike:

"I forgot to look for my ring last night after it fell behind the couch. Would you mind looking if you have time, and if you find it, could you please bring it to dinner tonight? Thanks!"

So being the super helpful wife that I am, I moved the couch and island, got down on my hands and knees, and found that little sucker.  Wa-la!  My precious!

Wait. Shoot.  What do I do with it now?  I knew that putting it in my pocket or in a bag would be an immediate recipe for disaster.  So, genius that I am, I put it on my thumb.  It slipped right on.  A little too easily I should say.  But I just couldn't think of a better spot.  Things are always safer attached to my body... right?

Next thing I know, it's time to head out the door for dinner.  Jackets and shoes are thrown on, food for Bella is packed, and we are just about to rush out the door, when of course, I realize the ring has gone missing!  My thumb is naked!  I immediately feel stupid, frustrated, dumb, mad at Mike (He should have known better than to ask me to bring it!), and kind of crazy.  How did I not feel that thing slide off my finger?!

But it's too late.  I have to go.  I jump in the car, pick up Mike, and explain to him how my successful search and rescue mission turned in to an epic failure.  The ring was lost.  Our marriage was doomed.

Well, we made it through dinner, and on the way home Mike did the regular run of the mill Q&A session.  No, I did not throw it in the trash.  No, it's not just sitting in my pocket.  No. No.  And no!

Gosh, I feel stupid.  And mad.  At me. At you.  At the world.

We're through the door, and I'm immediately getting Bella ready for bed.  Bottle. Check. Clothes off.  Check.  Diaper change.

No!

Stop that.  Oh my gosh!

The diaper is open for only a second, and I close it so fast I can hardly believe what I'm seeing.  No, Bella had not eaten the ring and done some number on it that quickly.  Oh no.  Yours truly had actually wrapped her husband's ring up in the diaper before they left for dinner.  Major mental brain lapse (I told you.)!  And there it was.  Still hanging out... in a soaked diaper... having traveled with Bella's rump for the past few hours.  I stand there, trying to process how in the world I managed to place my husband's ring- the symbol of his love and commitment- in my child's diaper!

Bella sees my stunned face and looks at me like there must be a monster in her diaper.  Mike rushes in.  I can hardly get the words out.  I just usher him over with my hand and let him take a peak.  He's speechless.  We remove the diaper and just stare at the contents.

To help us commemorate the moment, Bella wets the changing table.  Then our Pandora Christmas station starts playing the Hallelujah Chorus, no joke.  And then Bella starts wailing, of course.  And finally, the laughter begins to set in.  I'm convinced we've been cast in a sitcom.  Where's the hidden camera?

To conclude this "I Love Lucy" episode, I'd like to assure everyone that Mike's ring received a thorough washing.  I've also apologized to it.  It may never let Mike hold hands with me again... well, at least his left hand.  But I understand.

These things just take some time.

In Case You Missed the Fireworks Show in DC...

...don't worry, we've got you covered.

We'll let you join us on a DC rooftop for one of the best views of the fireworks, and as a bonus, you'll get to see Bella's reactions to her first fireworks show.

Oh, but there is just one more thing.  You see, before we headed up to the rooftop last night, we went to a church picnic.  And like all good church picnics there were lots of fun families, lots of amazing potluck dishes, and yes, even a good 'ol patriotic playin' band.  And yes, your's truly joined in for one of the numbers, and guess who caught it on film?  Mike wouldn't miss an opportunity to embarrass me.  And like a good wife, I won't rob him of it.

So yes, let the record show that first we went to a church picnic where Diane acted a fool.  And after you endure this special song and dance, you'll be rewarded with an amazing view of the DC fireworks show.  Promise.

Hope everyone had a great 4th!

Graduation, New England Lobster Rolls, and "Stroller"boarding

Last Thursday morning, we got up before the rest of the world to begin our pilgrimage to Mike's graduation ceremony at the Naval War College.  From Washington, DC to Newport, RI is about a seven hour drive per Google.  Per baby, it's about a 10-11 hour drive.  Our strategy was to get up super early and trick the baby into thinking it was still sleepy time.  Here's how that strategy worked out for us:

Eleven hours later we arrived in Newport.  The view from our adorable beach house made everything better.  Our little spot was "out of a storybook" cute and quite literally had a million dollar view overlooking the historic mansions of Newport.

Ahhh, vacation.

Our next plan was to pick up Grandma Gigi at the airport.  The end of this video gives a clue as to how that plan worked out:

One quasi-hurricane, a canceled flight, an overnight train trip, and a quick shower later, Gigi and family finally arrived at Mike's graduation with big smiles on our faces.  A gold star to Gigi for her amazing travel efforts!

Here's the super important Naval War College where my husband graduated from.  I only wish they had stuck him in one of those white uniforms for the day.  What's better than a man in uniform?  Perhaps a handsome Italian man with a beard in a dark suit?  Ah, it's a toss up.

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is the moment we've waited four years for!  Go Mike!  You did it!

(P.S. That's not our baby crying at the beginning of the video, although I can't say she endured the two hours without a tear or two.)

Speaking of Bella, here's our little girl trying to get a handle on all her Daddy has just accomplished.

And here's a precious Father/Daughter pic.

And why not add Mom in there, too!

And here is proof that Gigi actually made it!  After a night with no sleep, I'm surprised she still has a smile on her face.  Bella however, is looking a little rough.  That's what one morning without a nap does to her.

Although graduation was definitely the highlight of this trip, Lobster Rolls came in at a close second for Mike.

Cupcakes and champagne on the beach were my close second.

Bubbles on the beach were Bella's close second.  Or maybe it was "Stroller"boarding at the skate park on the beach. (Seriously, if you only have time for one video in this post, this is the one.)

Vacation with a baby is hard work, but we wouldn't have it any other way!

Signing off for another grand Mannina adventure!

Awkward Family Photo Friday!

So, a few weekends ago, my family went to a black tie affair.  Yes, a black tie affair.  Those things hardly happen anymore (which I actually think is a sad thing).  I don't think we- as in, the Davis family- have ever been to a black tie affair together.

After weeks of sweating over what to wear and discussing it multiple times over the phone, the event day finally arrived.  We donned our dresses and tuxes, waited for our limo (yeah right), and decided to take a family photo in the meantime.  Because how often does this happen?

But wait!  How the heck do you pose for a formal family photo?  We were all having flashbacks to high school prom.  Except wait.  That's my mom in a prom dress.  We stood outside in the backyard arguing over how to take this picture.  And here's what we came up with:

Now I know some of you are saying, "But wait.  You all look great."

Why thank you.  No really, I appreciate it and all.  But really, my mom decided we would look weird if we just stood in a straight line.  Kinda like an old prom picture stored under your bed.  So she decided to not make it weird by sitting down up front.  Right-o.  If you ask me, she looks like the Queen Mother.

Which would make my my dad the King, of course.

And a few more beards, please.  Thank you.

And there you have it.  Our awkward family photo.

Happy Friday!  And if this counts, then Happy April Fool's Day to the Davises, minus Michelle and Dan.  Oh how I wish I could give Dan a cool beard.
